The Devil's Violin at Fabula

Fabula storytelling festival takes place over a weekend in the heart of Sweden's capital city, Stockholm. The roster of artists included the fantastically entertaining Clare Murphy (Ireland) and Ma Xiaolon, one of the last practitioners of a thousand year old tradition of storytelling in the teahouses of Yangtzou, China. We (The Devil's Violin Company) performed both a shortened version of our previous show, The Devil's Violin, as well as a full performance of the Singing Bones.

The best solution for amplifying an acoustic violin?

For many years I struggled to find the ideal solution to mic'ing my fiddle in the range of groups that I work in. I started with piezo strip mics, which sounded poor. I then tried various clip-on mics such as the Audtio Technica ATM 35 hc, which was ok on quiter gigs but I struggled with getting enough level before feed-back. Also the tone reproduction was not faithful. About a year ago I found the answer - for me anyway.

Oli and Daniel back at the National!

Daniel Morden and myself will be back at the National Theatre this summer for the 4th year running. We will be performing throughout the day on the 30th of July and have a great selection of tales and tunes for all the family - look forward to seeing you there!

Cheers

Make Tomorrow Today - school song lyrics

Over the last week Luke and I have been visiting various schools around South Wales with our interactive concert. During the concert we write new verses for a song. The words to the chorus went like this:

Make tomorrow make tomorrow
Make tomorrow today
Make tomorrow make tomorrow
The ....... primary way

We have been really impressed with the creativity of the students at all of the schools and have decided to write down a few of the outcomes here...

St Thomas Primary, Swansea:

St Thomas Schools is very new
Make tomorrow today
St Thomas School is beautiful

A great summer of gigs

The Devils Violin have an exciting summer coming. First up is Hay Festival
http://www.hayfestival.com/

Hay is an extraordinary event. We're privileged to be a part of it. It is hard to think of another festival so packed with ideas and inspiration. Scientists, historians, politicians, comedians, activists, musicians, film- makers...and storytellers. Hay has been a strong advocate for the artform. Ben Haggarty is also in the lineup, telling stories that inspired his wonderful graphic novel MeZolith.
